We were disappointed when the village didn’t value the input from our neighbors in the Barrington and surrounding areas, labeling them as “outsiders.” While we understand that local matters are often decided within town boundaries, we believe that all communities benefit from incorporating agricultural experiences. We don’t live in distinct bubbles—what happens in one town affects others around it, and sustainably managed practices can enhance the entire region.
In developing our current proposal for Barrington Hills, we carefully considered the perspectives shared during the recent hearing, including those expressed by board members and the written comments from residents. In response, we have thoroughly detailed each aspect of the proposal and refined its scope to address the specific concerns raised. Additionally, we collaborated with the Illinois and Cook County Farm Bureaus to ensure our proposal adheres to all relevant standards and supports local agricultural practices.
For those outside Barrington Hills who wish to support our efforts, we encourage you to focus your letters or public comments on the strengths of the proposal itself rather than highlighting our farm. In the previous hearing, comments and letters centered around Little Ducky Flower Farm diverted the discussion away from the broader benefits of the amendment. By emphasizing the positive impacts of seasonal agricultural experiences for the entire community, supporters from outside the village can help keep the conversation on track and assist the board in recognizing the wide-ranging advantages this proposal offers to Barrington Hills and its neighboring towns. This initiative aims to create opportunities for everyone to enjoy and benefit from agriculture in Chicagoland.
Here’s how you can support this effort, even if you’re not a Barrington Hills resident:
Write a letter (email Village Clerk: clerk@vbhil.gov)
Highlight how agricultural experiences can bring mutual benefits to both Barrington Hills and surrounding areas.
Share Your Story on Social Media
Share your personal experiences with agricultural activities in the area, whether it’s visiting farms, learning about environmentally conscious, sustainably managed farming practices, or simply enjoying nature. Explain why you believe agricultural experiences are valuable for all communities, not just Barrington Hills.
Encourage Barrington Hills Residents to Get Involved
If you know someone in Barrington Hills, encourage them to engage with the amendment. Share why you think it’s important, but let them form their own opinions.
Speak Up for Regional Benefits
In conversations with others, highlight how agricultural experiences can foster healthier, more eco-conscious suburban communities across the area. Mention how integrating these experiences into suburban settings can benefit neighboring towns and encourage stronger community ties
Engage with Local Media or Blogs
If you’re comfortable, consider writing to local publications and sharing why you support integrating agricultural experiences into suburban life. Discuss the broader impact of these experiences on regional ecological health and community connection.
Support a Broader Vision for Agriculture
Talk about the interconnected nature of our region and how environmentally beneficial agricultural practices support a healthier, more connected community. Explain how supporting this amendment sets a positive precedent for environmentally responsible agriculture throughout the area.
Thank you for sharing your genuine support for eco-conscious, community-focused agriculture. Every voice matters.
